By this time Kelly Groucutt had departed. ELO's final album released 3rd of March 1986. After mining the Beatles gold mine for all those catchy hooks, by the time that Balance of Power was released, Jeff Lynne and company had pretty much found that once-rich vein going dry. This album did contain yet another Top 40 hit with Calling America, but by the mid-'80s, ELO were finding their audience and their inspiration on the wane. Not truly memorable, but passable. Balance of Power is the twelfth studio album by the Electric Light Orchestra ELO released in 1986. Balance of Power was the last studio album by the Electric Light Orchestra before their disbanding the band would later reform in 2000. By this time Kelly Groucutt had departed and the group was pared down to a trio of Jeff Lynne, Richard Tandy, and Bev Bevan. Recording for the album began in in 1984, with a planned release in spring 1985. The addition of several synthesizer tracks to the album. This is the last time ELO pulls out all the stops and makes an effective artistic statement. Futuristic sci-fi, the music is informed by complex classical and 1950's neo classical pop. It is something akin to a Pink Floyd album in tone and mettle, but emphasizing ELO's brand of harmony and humanity. While stylistically more homogenous than its eclectic forebearer, Discovery, it's no less ambitious. This one precedes their Balance of Power album with only Secret Messages between them and they were the two albums which use synthesizers heavily especially in creating background spoken words. Even so, the sound is unmistakably ELO. Electric Light Orchestra - Balance Of Power 1986. On ELOs 1981 concept album Time, Jeff Lynne pondered mankinds future and sang in a voice from a far-off age: Remember the good old 1980sWhen things were so uncomplicated What Lynne the visionary didnt foresee was ELOs demise in the coming decade. But they began the 80s with another massive hit, albeit one that alienated many rock fans. By 1979 ELO were one of the biggest bands in the world, but Jeff Lynne faced a tricky dilemma: how to follow an album as brilliant and successful as Out Of The Blue Lynnes response was bold, to say the least
