Gail Ann Dorsey born November 20, 1962 is an American musician. With a long career as a session musician mainly on bass guitar, she is perhaps best known for her lengthy residency in David Bowie's band, from 1995 to Bowie's death in 2016. Aside from playing bass, she sang lead vocals on live versions of Under Pressure taking the part originally sung by Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and dueted with Bowie on other songs, including The London Boys, Aladdin Sane 1913-1938-197, I Dig. Still, it would be nice to see Dorsey enjoy a big commercial breakthrough as a solo artist, and this 2004 release demonstrates that her talents as a singersongwriter haven't suffered a bit over the years. The impressively consistent I Used to Be, Dorsey's first solo album in 12 years, isn't a radical departure from her earlier recordings the Philadelphia native still favors a very R&B-influenced approach to poprock. Gail Ann Dorsey is an American bassist and vocalist with a distinguished session career, most notably her long association with David Bowie. Her diverse range of work includes performances andor recordings with, among others, Bryan Ferry, Boy George, the Indigo Girls, Khaled, Jane Siberry, The The, Skin, Tears for Fears, Gwen Stefani, Charlie Watts and Dar Williams. In addition, she has released three solo albums: The Corporate World 1988, Rude Blue 1992, and I Used To Be . Album: Gail Ann Dorsey. I Used to Be. SAD BUNNY. Andy Gill. Friday 19 November 2004 01:00. About a decade and a half ago, Gail Ann Dorsey released a brilliant debut album called The Corporate World, which showcased her diverse talents as singer and multi-instrumentalist across a range of styles, in sharp, articulate songs whose titles - Wasted Country, Corporate World - indicated their charged political tenor. When that album and a 1992 follow-up effort failed to ignite popular interest, she retreated to the safety of session and tour work, most recently as David Bowie's long-term bassist

For the person looking at an extension of Dorsey's work with the Bowie movement of late, there isn't a lot to parallel this work to that. This is a different cannon entirely.
It is however a relevant and welcome contribution to the genre of singer/songwriter/mutli instrumentalist/etc. The expectation can understandably be for Dorsey to come out with something highly eccentric and experimental, especially if you delve deep into the treatments she gives as a bass player to the likes of Bowie's repertoire. This record however is a very well articulated, very meaningful and very honest collection of well produced, easy to listen to songs that don't fit pop, don't fit rock, soul, funk, jazz or any other genre (in fact, it doesn't come close to many of these). It is just a nice offering that has themes within the lyrics that may or may not resonant with you.
I love the album.
