A cohesive, artistic covers album that often improves on the originals. by Tyler Clark. on December 04, 2017, 12:00am. In the years between Tribute To and its sequel, hes attained and maintained an enviable combination of stadium-filling rock godhood and critic-approved weirdo scene cred. Between the Grammy nominations and covering The Super Bowl Shuffle with an internet cat, the sadness this time inspired by, well, the world going fully and collectively insane still found ways to creep in. When it did, James returned to voices outside his own to find that same sense of healing that he sought when Harrison died. Tribute to 2. Tribute to 2 Tracklist. What proves more intriguing is the matter of perspective. Differences in the mood and character of the eras in question, then and now, seem very much the crux of James interest in this project. As that records immediate successor, Tribute To 2 is perhaps most fruitfully read in conversation with it. If Eternally Even was James aggrieved effort to engage directly with a world in unrest, Tribute To 2 is an attempt to offer succor. Its a little glimpse of the past James hopes will soothe and reassure us. Its a really crazy time in the world right now, a lot of negative energy in the air, James told Billboard recently. Jim James of My Morning Jacket perfoms on stage during Take Root Festival at De Oosterport on Sept. 12, 2015 in Groningen, Netherlands. Just days after George Harrison passed away in 2001, My Morning Jackets Jim James recorded a bunch of the Beatles material as a way to come to terms with his grief. Here, James details the origins of Tribute To 2, My Morning Jackets future and the artist he looks up to for cover inspiration. When did the idea spark to do a Tribute To sequel Somebody brought up the idea of reissuing Tribute To 1, because it was out of print on vinyl. That got me thinking. I had all these other cover songs I recorded over the span of 5 or 6 years

The vinyl mastering on this LP is to die for. If only the pressing quality didn't destroy what would otherwise have been a fantastic sounding LP. Now I know why the presser of this lovely LP is not mentioned anywhere. Maybe hidden in the deadwax. My copy is of unacceptably poor quality-- non-fill and general uncleanable surface noise punctuated by loup pops. I'll update this review if I can figure out who pressed this. That said, if the vinyl had not been subpar you would have heard a set of sixties and seventies covers that were all really fucking good and that sounded spectacular. This is an excellent recording. I'll try the black vinyl to see if it's any better.
