One of the last albums released before Jiménez died of hepatitis brought on by heavy drinking, El Cantinero is an interesting look at one of Mexico's most highly regarded composers. Several of the tracks are classics, especially El Ray and El Cobarde, but the most interesting are those that Jiménez utilized to dig deep into his own psyche. José Alfredo Jiménez-Sandoval Spanish pronunciation: 19 January 1926 23 November 1973 was a Mexican singer-songwriter of rancheras, whose songs are considered an integral part of Mexico's musical heritage. Jiménez was born in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Mexico. According to the singer Miguel Aceves Mejía, he did not play an instrument and did not even know the Spanish word for waltz or what keys his songs were in. Nonetheless, he composed more than 1,000 songs. José Alfredo Jiménez born in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Mexico on 9 January 1926 - died 23 November 1973 in Mexico City, Mexico was a legendary Mexican singer-songwriter in the ranchera style. His songs are considered part of the Mexican musical heritage and comparable, for instance, to what Woody Guthrie meant to American folk music.
