Though this album was released in 1965, Kentucky singerbanjo man Holcomb plays tunes that reach back to-and sometimes even predate-the earliest days of country and folk. His rough-edged tenor is a master marksmans bullet tearing straight into the heart of old spirituals A Village Churchyard , traditional folk Darling Corey , and string-band tunes Free Little Bird . The High Lonesome. 17 tracks 52:28. The legendary Roscoe Holcomb performs 21 powerful songs shaped by the hard times and conflict between old and new that marked his life in the Kentucky mountains. A hard-hitting singer and banjo-player, he also performs unaccompanied ballads, banjo and harmonica solos, and with a guitar. These recordings from 1961, 1964, and 1974 were previously released on three different Folkways LP records and had a powerful influence on the folk music revival. It's straight from the bone, with high, at times harsh vocals that make no concession to popular clichés to make things easier on the ear. That's one thing which makes the parallel to Dylan easy to see. The banjo playing is impressive, and the anthology is embellished by lengthy liner notes and recollections by John Cohen. Roscoe Holcomb, born Roscoe Halcomb September 5, 1912 died February 1, 1981 was an American singer, banjo player, and guitarist from Daisy, Kentucky. A prominent figure in Appalachian folk music, Holcomb was the inspiration for the term high, lonesome sound, coined by folklorist and friend John Cohen. The high lonesome sound term is now used to describe bluegrass singing, although Holcomb was not, strictly speaking, a bluegrass performer. 1 Performance style. Moonshiner 2. On Top of Old Smoky 3. Cohen would eventually-and famously-describe this as the high lonesome sound. For years, he couldnt even unpack his own response to it. I thought it was modern, but also ancient. In the opening minutes of Roscoe Holcomb from Daisy, Kentucky, which combines footage Cohen shot in 1962 and 1974, Holcomb is on a porch swing, playing a banjo and singing. He is wearing a terrific outfit: vertically striped bell-bottom pants, a vertically striped short-sleeve dress shirt, and a wide-brimmed black hat
