In 1960, photographer William Claxton and noted musicologist Joachim E. Berendt traveled the United States for about forth months in an old Chevrolet, hot on the trail of jazz music. The result of their collaboration is an amazing collection of photographs, beautifully printed on heliogravure. Still one of the best photobooks on jazz. Joachim-Ernst Berendt was a German music journalist. Berendt was known by jazz fans as an astute critic, who wrote several books on this American art form and helped produce more than two hundred and fifty musical recordings. In addition, he authored books on nature and acoustical phenomena. It was at that time, that he developed his interest in jazz. After an injury cut his military career short, Berendt helped to found the Sudwestfunk SWF radio and television network in Baden-Baden in 1945.
