To the question what kind of music punk rock was, you have to resort to. Robert Christgau, The New York Times. Of particular frustration to Heylin is that today The Ramones have moved to the forefront of the history of American punk rock at the expense of bands that he feels are more deserving. I should say that while I am a Ramones fan, I actually sympathize somewhat with Heylin's view. Xv, 426 p. of plates : 22 cm. Richard Hell, Television and Richard Hell and the Voidoids, This engaging & informative history tells you all you'll ever need to know about the birth of American Punk Rock. sorts the conflicts and conflagrations with a critic's eye and a fan's heart. The Velvets were an entirely underground phenomenon during their actual existence. When they were finally rent asunder by the usual 'musical differences', five years after their formation and four years after recording rock & roll's most revolutionary debut album, they had never even risen to the intoxicating heights of the Billboard Hot Hundred. The revolution instigated by The Velvet Underground and Nico was still germinating. Richard Hell and the Voidoids were an American punk rock band, formed in New York City in 1976 and fronted by Richard Hell, a former member of the Neon Boys, Television and the Heartbreakers. Kentucky-born Richard Meyers moved to New York City after dropping out of high school in 1966, aspiring to become a poet. He and his best friend from high school, Tom Miller, founded the rock band the Neon Boys which became Television in 1973. The pair adopted stage names Miller called himself Verlaine after. But Nico eclipsed the Doors' darkness on The Marble Index, an album that replaces the summer of love with the winter of despair. These are the psychic landscapes, glittering in their immaculate, lifeless majesty of someone cut off from the thawing warmth of human contact and fellowship. Along with Morrison's encouragement, a key breakthrough for Nico was her discovery of the harmonium. I mean, you can see the romance of Warhol, the Factory, and the Velvets, but when you get up close up to it, you think 'Jesus, this is pretty gloomy, boring stuff. Like Marble Index, Desertshore sold poorly and Nico drifted off again, recording no music for four years
